Our Journey
The story of Ethiopian sports and cultural activity in the UK reflects decades of community building, resilience, and shared identity. From early migration to organised national events, each chapter has contributed to the strong and connected community we see today.
OUR HISTORY
Early Migration (1950s–1970s)
Ethiopians began arriving in the UK in the 1950s, primarily as students. Migration increased during the 1970s due to political instability, creating a growing need for unity and community identity.

1987 – Football Begins
Weekly football gatherings started to unite the community, support youth, build networks, and strengthen identity.
OUR HISTORY
1990–1993 – MEKDELA FC
One of the first Ethiopian-affiliated football clubs competing in the Amateur Premier League.
OUR HISTORY
1993–1994 – ESCA Formation
The Ethiopian Sports & Culture Association formed after early tournaments. Though short-lived, it laid the foundation for future organisations.
OUR HISTORY
Mid-1990s–2000s – Ethio-Star Success
Ethio-Star FC competed internationally in tournaments across Washington DC, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt, achieving major success.
